Canva's AI Limits Updated: Here's What You Actually Need to Know

Back in November 2025, I wrote a post about Canva's AI limits and how they work. At the time, there wasn't a lot of clarity from Canva about the specifics, so I kept things pretty general. A lot has changed since then, and I wanted to give you a proper update with the full picture.

The short version: Canva has reorganized how AI tools work, published actual usage numbers, and added a tracker so you can see where you stand. They've also introduced a paid AI Pass add-on for people who need more. It's a much more transparent system now, and once you understand how it's set up, it's pretty easy to work with.

Let's walk through all of it.

First: Not All Canva AI Tools Count the Same

This is the part that trips people up most. Canva has two categories of AI tools, and only one of them draws from your monthly allowance.

AI design tools are included with your plan and don't count against your allowance at all. These include:

  • Canva AI (text)
  • Magic Write
  • Photo and Video Animations
  • AI Voice
  • On-device ML tools in Affinity

Then there are the  AI tools that share your monthly allowance. These are divided into three tiers based on how much computing power they use:

  • Standard AI tools (lightest on your allowance)
  • Premium AI tools (moderate usage)
  • Ultra AI tools (heaviest usage, cutting-edge models)

All three tiers pull from the same shared monthly bucket. So if you use a lot of Premium tools, you'll have fewer uses left for Standard or Ultra ones.

What's in Each Tier?

Standard AI Tools

These use the least amount of your allowance and include:

  • Magic Formulas (in Canva Sheets)
  • Magic Write for SEO

Premium AI Tools

These are more advanced and use more of your monthly allowance. This is the tier most people will run into limits with:

  • Magic Layers
  • Generate a design with Canva AI
  • Create an image with Canva AI
  • Build interactive experiences with Canva Cod
  • Generate elements with Canva AI (shapes, 3D, charts, forms, and more)
  • Music and Sound Effect Generator
  • Form generator
  • Premium AI tools in Affinity (Generative Fill, Expand, Edit, Generate Images and Vectors)

Note: Affinity premium AI tools are not available to Canva Free accounts.

Ultra AI Tools

These use the most allowance and run on Canva's latest cutting-edge AI models:

  • Conversational design with Canva AI 2.0
  • Create a video clip with Canva AI
  • Create an image with Canva AI (Ultra version)

Canva now publishes the usage ranges by plan, which is a big improvement from the old "you've hit your limit" surprise message. Keep in mind these numbers are the maximum if you only use one type of tool and stick to simple prompts. The more complex your request, or the more advanced the tool, the more of your allowance it will use.

How Much Allowance Do You Get?

Canva now publishes the usage ranges by plan. These numbers represent the maximum you'd get if you only used one type of tool and stuck to simple prompts. Complex prompts and more advanced tools will use more, so your actual number of uses may vary.

When does your allowance reset?

  • Paid plans and Canva for Nonprofits: resets on your billing date (even on annual plans, it resets monthly).
  • Canva Free: resets at 12:00 a.m. UTC on the 1st of each month.
  • Daily and weekly plans: pro-rated and resets on your billing date.

A Quick Note on Magic Layers

Magic Layers is one of the most exciting tools Canva has added recently, and it deserves its own mention because it's also one of the heavier Premium AI features. If you haven't tried it yet, it takes a flat design or image and separates it into editable layers, which opens up a lot of creative possibilities.

Just know that because it's a more complex operation, it uses more of your Premium AI allowance per use than something simpler like a one-off image generation. It's absolutely worth using, just something to be aware of if you're planning to lean into it heavily.

How to Track Your AI Usage

Canva has a built-in tracker so you're never caught off guard. Here's how to find it:

  1. From the Canva homepage, click your profile icon in the top right.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Click Billing.
  4. Scroll down to AI usage.

You'll see how much of your allowance you've used and when it resets. Canva will also send you a notification as you get close to your limit, so you don't have to check constantly.

Quick tip:

If you're planning to experiment with new AI features, check your tracker first. It's a good habit to know where you stand before diving in, especially toward the end of your billing cycle.

What Happens When You Hit Your Limit?

On paid plans, Canva doesn't just cut you off completely. If you reach your limit for Premium AI features, you'll see short pauses between generations. Once the pause ends, you can re-enter your prompt and continue. It's a little inconvenient, but it does mean you're not completely locked out.

If you want uninterrupted access, Canva Pro and Teams users can purchase an AI Pass add-on to your subscription. Canva Free users can upgrade to a paid plan.

Need More AI? There's AI Pass

If you regularly push up against your AI allowance, Canva has a paid add-on called AI Pass that gives you a significantly larger pool to work with. Here's what you need to know:

  • AI Pass is a monthly recurring add-on, available for Canva Pro and Canva Business subscribers
  • Canva says it gives you significantly more AI than a standard plan, but they don’t currently publish the specific usage numbers for AI Pass anywhere on their site. If you purchase it, your Billing page in Settings will show your actual allowance
  • It covers all three tiers: Standard, Premium, and Ultra AI tools
  • It takes effect immediately and appears as a line item in your Billing page
  • It's charged pro-rata to align with your current billing cycle, and you can cancel anytime from Settings
  • Team admins can purchase AI Pass for individual team members from the People page

One important clarification: you do not need AI Pass to access Canva's AI features. Your plan already includes a generous allowance. AI Pass is for people who are creating heavily and want to scale up without any slowdowns.

As of this writing, AI Pass is priced at $100/month. Always check Canva's current pricing page to confirm, since Canva updates things often.

Using Canva AI Through Other Apps

Here's something a lot of people don't know: if you use an AI assistant like ChatGPT, Claude, or Microsoft Copilot, and you've connected it to Canva, any Canva AI designs you generate through those tools will count against your Canva AI allowance. It all pulls from the same monthly pool, regardless of which tool you used to make the request.

So if you're using a connected AI tool to create Canva designs, just factor that into your usage planning.

What About Third-Party Apps in the Marketplace?

If you use apps from Canva's Apps Marketplace (third-party integrations or tools you've added to Canva), AI generations made through those apps are not included in your monthly Canva allowance. They have their own separate limits or subscriptions managed by whoever created the app. If you ever have questions about a Marketplace app's usage, check the app itself for a "Created by" label to know who to contact.

The Bottom Line

If you're a casual Canva user who dips into AI features here and there, you're likely not going to hit your limit. Most people on Canva Pro have more than enough room for regular, everyday use.

Where it starts to matter is if you're a heavy creator who leans on things like Magic Layers, Canva AI 2.0 conversations, video generation, or Dream Lab image creation regularly. In that case, it's worth checking your tracker, being a little strategic about when you experiment with new tools, and considering whether AI Pass makes sense for your workflow.

The good news is that Canva is being much more transparent about all of this now. Knowing the numbers, understanding which tools sit in which tier, and having a tracker to check makes it a lot easier to plan without any unpleasant surprises mid-design.

“Up to…” doesn’t tell me anything! I’ve generated 1 article and 4 soundless videos, and already hit 73% usage on the free tier. What I need is actual numbers not “Whatever”
