Canva's AI Limits Updated: Here's What You Actually Need to Know

Back in November 2025, I wrote a post about Canva's AI limits and how they work. At the time, there wasn't a lot of clarity from Canva about the specifics, so I kept things pretty general. A lot has changed since then, and I wanted to give you a proper update with the full picture.

The short version: Canva has reorganized how AI tools work, published actual usage numbers for the first time, and added a tracker so you can see where you stand. It's a much more transparent system now, and once you understand how it's set up, it's pretty easy to work with.

Let's walk through all of it.

First: Not All Canva AI Tools Count the Same

This is the part that trips people up. Canva actually has two categories of AI tools, and only one of them draws from your monthly allowance.

AI design tools are included with your plan and don't count against your allowance at all. These include things like:

  • Canva AI (text)
  • Magic Write
  • Photo and Video Animations
  • AI Voice
  • On-device ML tools in Affinity

Then there are the

AI tools that share your monthly allowance. These are divided into three tiers based on how much computing power they use:

  • Standard AI tools (lightest on your allowance)
  • Premium AI tools (moderate usage)
  • Ultra AI tools (heaviest usage, cutting-edge models)

All three tiers pull from the same shared monthly bucket. So if you use a lot of Premium tools, you'll have fewer uses left for Standard or Ultra ones.

What's in Each Tier?

Standard AI Tools

These use the least amount of your allowance and include:

  • Magic Formulas (in Canva Sheets)
  • Magic Write for SEO

Premium AI Tools

These are more advanced and use more of your monthly allowance. This is the tier most people will run into limits with:

  • Magic Layers
  • Generate a design with Canva AI
  • Create an image with Canva AI
  • Build interactive experiences with Canva Code
  • Generate elements with Canva AI (shapes, 3D, charts, forms, and more)
  • Premium AI tools in Affinity (Generative Fill, Expand, Edit, Generate Images and Vectors)

Note: Affinity premium AI tools are not available to Canva Free accounts.

Ultra AI Tools

These use the most allowance and run on Canva's latest AI models:

  • Create a video clip with Canva AI
  • Create an image with Canva AI (Ultra version)

You might notice that image creation appears in both Premium and Ultra. The difference is the model being used behind the scenes. Ultra tools tap into the newest, most powerful AI, which is why they cost more of your allowance.

How Much Allowance Do You Get?

This is the big update. Canva now publishes the usage ranges by plan. These numbers represent the maximum you'd get if you only used one type of tool and stuck to simple prompts. Complex prompts and more advanced tools will use more, so your actual number of uses may vary.

Important note on resets:

If you're on a paid plan or Canva for Nonprofits, your allowance resets on your billing date.

Canva Free resets at 12:00 a.m. UTC on the 1st of each month.

Daily and weekly plans are pro-rated and reset on your billing date.

A Word About Magic Layers

Magic Layers deserves its own mention because it's one of the most exciting new tools Canva has added, and it's also one of the heavier Premium AI features.

If you haven't tried it yet, Magic Layers takes a flat design or image and separates it into editable layers. It's honestly a lot of fun to play with. But because it's a more complex operation, it uses more of your Premium AI allowance per use than something like image generation. Something worth keeping in mind if you're planning to use it often.

How to Track Your AI Usage

Canva now has a built-in tracker so you're never in the dark about where you stand. Here's how to find it:

  • From the Canva homepage, click your profile icon in the top right
  • Go to Settings
  • Click Billing
  • Scroll down to AI usage

You'll see how much of your allowance you've used and when it resets. Canva will also send you a notification as you get close to your limit, so you don't have to check constantly if you don't want to.

Tip:

If you're planning to experiment with new AI features, check your tracker first. It's a good habit to know where you are before you start playing, especially toward the end of your billing cycle.

What Happens When You Hit Your Limit?

On paid plans, Canva doesn't just cut you off completely. If you reach your limit for Premium AI features, you'll see short pauses between generations. Once the pause ends, you can re-enter your prompt and continue. It's a little inconvenient, but it does mean you're not completely locked out.

If you want uninterrupted access, Canva Pro and Teams users can purchase an AI Pass add-on to your subscription. Canva Free users can upgrade to a paid plan.

One More Thing: Third-Party Apps

If you use apps from Canva's Apps Marketplace (things like third-party integrations or tools you've connected to Canva), any AI generations made through those apps are not included in your monthly allowance. Those tools have their own separate limits or subscriptions.

The Bottom Line

If you're a casual Canva user who dips into AI features here and there, you're probably not going to hit your limit. Most people on Canva Pro have more than enough room for regular use.

Where it starts to matter is if you're a heavy user who relies on features like Magic Layers, Dream Lab image generation, or Canva Code. In that case, it's worth checking your tracker regularly and pacing yourself toward the end of your billing cycle.

The good news is that Canva is being much more transparent about all of this now. Knowing the numbers, understanding the tiers, and having a tracker to check makes it a lot easier to plan your workflow without any unpleasant surprises.
