How to Resize a Canva Design: 3 Ways (Free, Pro, and Canva AI)
Share
You finish a design you really like, and then you need it in a different size. The square Instagram post has to become a Facebook post. The Facebook post has to become a Pinterest pin. Before you know it, you are staring at a blank page and thinking about rebuilding the whole thing.
Please do not do that to yourself. There are three ways to resize a Canva design, and every one of them lets you keep the work you already did. One needs Canva Pro, one works on the free version, and one uses Canva AI to make several sizes at once.
Each method gets you most of the way there. In every case, you may need to make a few small adjustments to the layout afterward, and that is completely normal. Changing the shape of a page changes how everything sits on it, so a quick touch-up is part of the process.
Before You Resize: Keep Your Original Safe
Whichever method you choose, it helps to keep your original design untouched. Some of these methods create a new copy for you automatically, and others you can set up that way yourself. Either way, having the original to compare against makes it much easier to spot what moved when the new size is ready.
Method 1: Resize a Canva Design with the Resize Button (Canva Pro)
This is the quickest route if you have Canva Pro. The Resize option lives right in the design window, and Canva helps you rebuild your page at a different size.
- Open the design you want to resize.
- Click Resize in the menu above your design. Depending on your account, the button may have a slightly longer name, but it will have the word Resize in it.
- Choose a new size from the list, or type in a custom size if the one you need is not there.
- If Canva offers to make a copy at the new size, choose that option so your original stays safe.
- Let Canva build the new page, then look it over from top to bottom.
Canva moves and scales your elements to fit the new size, and for many designs that gets you very close. You might still need to nudge a text box, reposition a photo, or adjust spacing so nothing feels crowded.
Best for: Canva Pro users who need one design in one new size, quickly.
Method 2: Resize a Canva Design for Free (Copy and Paste)
Without Canva Pro, you do not get the Resize button, but you can still reuse your design. This method takes a few more clicks, and it works on any plan.
- Open your design and copy the page you want to reuse.
- Create a brand new design in the size you need. You can search for the size on the Canva home page, or choose custom size and type in the dimensions.
- Paste the page into your new design file.
- Adjust the layout to fit the new shape.
Your text, graphics, and photos all come over with the page, but they land on a page with different proportions. When you adjust, work in this order: background first, then text, then spacing. Fixing them in that order keeps you from redoing the same thing twice.
Best for: Free Canva users, or anyone who wants full control over how the new size comes together.
Method 3: Resize a Canva Design with Canva AI
This is the fast one when you need more than one size. Instead of resizing again and again, you ask Canva AI for everything at once. It does not require Canva Pro.
- Select the design page you want to resize.
- Click Canva AI in the left-hand sidebar.
- Type a prompt, such as: "Resize this page for Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn."
- Canva AI goes through the process of redesigning the page for each size and places all of them inside the same design file.
- Review each page and fix anything that needs it.
This method works pretty well, and it saves a lot of time. There are a couple of situations where you may need to adjust the background, or tidy up some spacing and alignment, so give every page a look before you download or post anything.
Best for: Anyone who needs one design in several sizes at the same time.
Which Method Should You Use?
There is no single right answer here. The best method is the one that matches your plan and what you need today.
| Method | Plan needed | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resize button | Canva Pro | One new size, fast | Minor layout adjustments |
| Copy and paste | Free | Full control, any plan | Layout adjustments after pasting |
| Canva AI | Free | Several sizes at once | Check background, spacing, and alignment |
What to Check After You Resize a Canva Design
No matter which method you pick, run through this short list before you call the new size finished:
- Background: Does it fill the whole page, and does it still look the way you intended?
- Text: Is anything too close to an edge, cut off, or hard to read at the new size?
- Photos and graphics: Are they positioned and cropped the way you want?
- Spacing and alignment: Does everything still feel balanced on the page?
Most of the time this takes a minute or two, which is far less than rebuilding a design from the ground up.

You Do Not Have to Start From Scratch
Resizing a Canva design is one of those skills that quietly saves you hours. Once you know all three methods, you can pick the right one without overthinking it. Use the resize button when you have Pro and need one new size, copy and paste when you are on the free plan, and Canva AI when you need several sizes at once.
You are not behind if you have been rebuilding designs by hand. You just did not have these options in front of you yet.
